Ingratitude is the worlds pay of

The bear took up revenge on farmer, just as he had promised. At night he went to the farmer's rye field and ate rye germs, as it has just raised the grain. The bear was always taking the same road, and soon he had trampled up a path. The farmer knew that it was the bear who was destroying his crop so he set up a trap. When the bear was walking his usual path, he got caught in to the trap and started screaming awfully.
The man woke up and rushed to the rye field where he found the bear in the trap.
- My dear brother, - said the bear - let me loose. I will reward you for your kindness.
- Actually, I thought of killing you, - answered the man, - because you destroyed my rye field. But for old friendship's sake, I shall release you.
The man let the bear free. Once the bear was free, he forgot his promise and said angrily to the man.
- I force your ingratitude down to your throat. First, you tricked me when we shared the harvest and then you intentionally put up a trap for me.
- This is how you talk now, - said the man. And you just promised to reward me for my kindness.
- I will reward you, - said the bear. But so is the custom in this world that good deeds are rewarded with evil. Ingratitude is the world's pay.
- Here you are wrong, - the man claimed. Good will be rewarded with good and evil with evil.

They came to argue about who was right and eventually they decided to seek out a judge who had to settle the dispute. When they walked some chunk of a road they met an old horse.
- Hey horse, you are old and wise to judge between us. So here it is, - said the farmer. Bear promised to reward me if I freed him from the trap. When I did this, he threatened to eat me up and said that good deeds are rewarded with evil.
- Bear is right, - replied the horse. For over 30 years I have faithfully served my master, pulled heavy loads and plowed the fields. Last night I heard him command his servant to kill the old nag because I am just a nuisance and no longer do anything useful. Good is rewarded with evil. This is why it is just right for the bear to eat you.

But the man was not content with this, but wanted to take the matter before another court. So they continued their walk in the woods. When they had gone some way they saw an old dog that was hanging from a tree.
- This is an old and experienced dog, - said the man. Let us take him to be our judge.
So they explained the reason for the dispute to the dog.
- Bear is right, - replied the dog. For many years I have been faithful to my master. I have given him many good puppies, guarded his house and followed him in search of food. See here what thanks I got. Now when I'm old he likes not to feed me anymore, but has hanged me on this tree. The world will reward good with evil.
- I am not satisfied with this judgement, - said the farmer.

So they agreed to seek a third judge. After a while they met a fox and as he is known to be wise they asked him to be judge and put forward their case for him. Fox promised to decide the case, but whispered to the farmer:
- If you'll give me all your chickens in the hen house, I will judge to your advantage.
The man nodded and promised the fox his hens.
- It's a tricky case in this, - said the fox. It's probably best that we sit down.
So they have been sitting for a while and the fox thought about and wondered, and finaly he said:
- It seems that probably you bear are right. But to make no mistakes, it is probably best that we go and look at the place where everything happened. It is a delicate matter to give in.
Together went the farmer, the bear and the fox to the rye field. When the fox saw the field, he said:
- This here does not look good. There is much damage you bear did to the grain.
- You probably are right, - said the bear. But you do not know what a deathly trap the peasant created to me. Come, I'll show it to you.
So did the others followed after the bear on to the path where the peasant put up a trap for him.
- Setting of conditions are now rather different, - said the fox to the farmer, - so now I can see how it all looked.
Then the fox said to the bear:

- Now, you go up the path, so I can see how you got yourself into the trap.
The bear stepped on the trap and got stuck in it with his foot and could not escape.
- Well, - said the fox, - now it stands at the same point as in the beginning and you do not need to argue anymore. Now you man, you can go home and you bear, you are about to stay here.
Then both the farmer and the fox went home.
But when it became dark the fox ran straight to the farmer's hen house. Now he would get his reward. Hens started to cackle and farmer's wife, who heard the commotion, ran out of the house and even penned the fox with a piece of wood. Having barely managed to escape him, all bruised, hid the fox in his lair, licking his wounds. He said to himself:
- It's so true that good deeds always are rewarded with evil.
